Miyoko Inase- Certified Birth Doula (Madriella), Childbirth Educator

I've been working as a professional doula since 2011, and what I love most about this work is having the ability to make a difference for new parents during the most difficult and wonderful life-changing experience that is birth.

For some people, having a calm, experienced presence there just for them during this most intensely emotional process can make the whole difference no matter if birth goes as expected, or if there are complications along the way.

After a lifetime of interest in childbirth, and an ill-fitted career in my 20's, I found my way to doula work in 2011 and have been attending births ever since.  I've attended at all the major hospitals in the Albuquerque metro, and can provide insight to navigating the medical system no matter what your individual preferences for your birth are.

My Philosophy

I believe that an undisturbed, natural birth is what is most beneficial for healthy moms and babies, that medical interventions should only be used when there is clear, substantiated evidence that mom and/or baby are experiencing complications, and that judicious and compassionate use of pain medications should always be considered.

My dream is for all women to have confidence in their bodies, to face the uncertainty of birth with courage, and most of all to have an empowering birth experience that brings deep satisfaction and enrapture with their new baby.

My Training and Certifications:

Service Options

  • $750 single payment
  • $135/month for 6 mo.*
  • $70/month for 12 mo.*

Prenatal visits- I prefer to meet with clients between 2 and 4 times from the time of hire up until labor and birth.  These meetings typically last 1-2 hours and are usually held in the client’s home.  We will go over any questions the client(s) have, specific preferences for birth, and I can provide other resources for information as needed.  We can also practice massage and pain coping techniques, positions for labor, or anything else that would be helpful in preparations.  I am also available during daytime hours by phone and email to discuss anything that comes up along the way.

Continuous Support for your labor and birth- I am available by phone 24 hours a day beginning when the pregnancy reaches 37 weeks, at which time I am available to provide labor support in the client’s home and/or at the place of birth.  Support can include, but is not limited to, reassurance and perspective, positioning suggestions for comfort or labor progress, guidance for the partner, relaxation tools and breathing reminders, and assistance with informed decision making.  I will meet the client(s) at the place of birth when the time comes, and continue to provide support.  I will stay through birth and until the new family is settled and ready for some much needed rest (typically when checked into recovery room, 2-3 hours after birth).

Postpartum visits- I include 2 visits after birth, and prefer for the first visit to be within the first week to bring any supplies or resources needed, review the birth experience, and to check up on recovery, breastfeeding, and adjustment with the new baby. The second visit can be scheduled at the client’s convenience within the first 4 weeks and I can do a variety of things that might help including light housework, meal prep, errands, help with older children, or a baby-holder while you nap or shower.  Extra visits can be arranged if needed, and the cost is $30 per visit within the first 3 months.

My Code of Ethics and Professional Standards

I have attended several birth doula trainings and continuing education courses throughout my journey, and currently hold certification through the Madriella Doula Network at the Somatic Arts and Sciences Institute in California.  The Madreilla Doula Code of Ethics says this:

As a Doula I will…

Assist the mother before, during, and after birth by providing emotional support, physical comfort, information, and advocacy.

Assist the mother with writing a Birth Plan prior to labor and communicating these desires to the mother’s family and medical care providers.

Provide support during the postpartum period as well by discussing the experience with the mother and providing guidance in feeding issues, specifically related to positioning and timing.

Act in an appropriate and respectful manner.

As a Doula I will not…

Make decisions for a mother or family member.

Offer medical advice or perform any medical or clinical procedure.

Contradict advice given by your chosen doctor, nurse, midwife or other hospital staff.

A complete copy of our Standards of Practice can be found here.

Doulas of the Southwest

I am a member of this wonderful group of independent, private doulas who meet together to educate expectant parents on the role of a doula. We are not a collective, co-op, or an agency, but an affiliation of private doulas who support each other's work and provide information on perinatal topics and doula care in the greater Albuquerque community.
